Floppy Purse Tutorial

I had this idea for a floppy purse where the top just flops over the base and so one day last week on my lunch break I decided to try it. This truly is a 1/2 hour floppy purse because I did it while I was home on my break, took pics, posted a teaser and made my lunch all in the 45 minutes I had! You can do it too!

To start, cut 2 pieces of your base fabric, 2 pieces of the lining and two pieces of fusable interfacing - all at 11x14 inches. Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the base fabric using your iron.

1. Put the right sides of the base fabric together.
2. Stitch 3 sides, starting at one of the 14" sides, at a 1/4" seam. Back stitch at the beginning and end.
3. Press open seams. Fold the base to match up both seams to help make a flat base. At both bottom corners, sew a straight line making a small triangle. It's probably about 1" from the corner.
4. Cut off the excess fabric from the corners.

5. Repeat steps 2-4 for the lining fabric but leave about a 4" opening at the bottom of the lining so that you can turn the bag right side out at the end. I sewed the lining at a 3/8" seam so that it ends up being a little bit smaller than the base.
6. Turn the lining right side out and leave the base fabric inside out. Put the lining inside of the base, right sides together.
7. Sew the base and lining together with a 1/4" seam.
8. Pull the lining out and put your hand into the 4" opening and grab the base fabric. Turn it right side out.

9. This is what it will now look like.
10. Sew shut the hole in the lining. You can stitch it by hand to make it look nicer, but I didn't really care since it'll be on the inside of my bag so I just stitched it closed with my machine.
11. Push the lining back into the bag, making sure you push out the corners. It should have a pretty flat base. Press.
12. Make a seam very close to the edge to finish it off. Now you're all done!

okay, so I forgot to clip that one thread...other than that pretty cute!
And just because it seems I'm hooked on yoyo's (remember this and this?) I decided to make one for the outside of the floppy purse.

yoyo and velcro closure - all done!
